And I felt that these guys knew what they were doing, so I didn't worry about myself at all the whole time" he said.

He continued to say, 'somebody had to take care of this young man, and so I thought, well if I can do it, I certainly should. He was on the w…

I’ve made over N1m, says robbery suspect Akeem Anthony – Bus conductor

A 30-year-old suspect, Akeem Anthony, arrested by operatives of Lagos Police Command, has said he has made over N1 million since he ventured into robbery.

The suspect, who hails from Ondo State and was arrested with another gang member, told Vanguard: “I am married with two children. I was a bus conductor and I live at Ijegun, Ikotun area of Lagos.

“I was a member of Eiye confraternity. I was arrested for robbery at Ikotun. I have robbed about five victims since I started and had made over one million Naira.

“We were three in our group, but one of us is dead. This other guy was our motorcyclist. We bought our two locally-made pistols from Abule-Ado area of Lagos for N35,000 each, while a cartridge costs N1,000.

“Since I started robbery, I have never killed anybody and I regret going into it in the first place. I was arrested with my pistols, while I was going out; I was not arrested while in operation.

“I stopped going to school when I was in SSS one. I promise never to do it again.”

8,500 PDP members defect to APC in Rivers

No fewer than 8,500 members of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State, yesterday, defected to All Progressives Congress, APC, at a rally organised in Port Harcourt by a former pro-PDP group called I see You.

National Leader of I See You group, Mr. Chizi Nyeomasila, said the rally was a forum for local government executives of the group to defect, adding that the group will also organise rallies in the various local government areas for members at ward levels to defect.

He said at the end of the programme at the local government areas, a total of 108,000 of its members would have formally crossed over to APC.

He said they had to leave PDP when they realised that APC had what he termed “a better programme for the state.”

“PDP is a failure in the state. We were there but have now seen that APC will serve the common good of the state better. Like Paul in the Bible, we now see clearly,” he added.

Enugu APC crisis: Why Nwoye cannot expel Foreign Affairs Minister – Njeze

ABUJA – A chieftain of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Ejike Njeze, yesterday dismissed threats by the chairman of the party in Enugu state, Ben Nwoye, to expel the Minister of Foreign Affairs, for allegedly altering the list of delegates that will participate in the party’s forthcoming national convention, saying the allegations were unfounded.

Nwoye had alleged in a recent press briefing that the Minister breached Article 21 of the party’s delegates’ list and so deserved expulsion as punishment for such offence.

But in an interview with  Vanguard  in Abuja, Chief Njeze described the threat by the state chairman as an unfortunate and senseless protest against Onyeama’s foiling of his attempt to hijack  and compromise the local government congresses in order to hand over a list of his cronies, family members and girlfriends as delegates to the party’s forthcoming national convention.

He added that Nwoye had no moral right to speak on the expulsion of a high-ranking member of th…

Anambra: Race for deputy governor begins

WITH the governorship primaries of the major political parties for the November 18 election in Anambra State over, the battle has been shifted to who would be selected as deputy governors to those who secured their parities’ tickets.

In the All Progressives Congress, APC, some notable names were already making the rounds, although it was gathered that stakeholders of the party would consider the choice of the governorship candidate, Dr. Tony Nwoye, whose prerogative it is to appoint his running mate. Sources in the party, however, said though Anambra Central and South senatorial zones stood on the same pedestal to produce Nwoye’s deputy, a very loyal ally of the APC candidate from Anambra Central was top on the list of those in contention. The said ally, who is a grassroot politician, had remained in the Nwoye camp even during his days in the PDP.

A source in APC told Vanguard, yesterday, that some stakeholders were also considering nominating one of the governorship aspirants who lo…

Court stops JUTH from sacking resident doctors

An Industrial Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday stopped the management of Jos University Teaching Hospital from sacking its resident doctors.

JUTH, in moving to sack the doctors, relied on the Federal Government circular of 2013, which stipulated that the doctors could serve for only six years.

The doctors, through their Counsel, Mr Gyang Zi, have objected to that, citing what they said was the “most recent circular”, dated April 20, 2016.

The 2016 circular allows the doctors to serve for between nine and 10 years, depending on their departments.

Zi, in an exparte motion, urged the court to restrain JUTH’s management from sacking the doctors.

He had argued that sacking them without allowing to serve the mandatory 10 years was “a flagrant abuse and violation of the Federal Government’s Circular of April 20, 2016”.

Justice Waziri Abali, the Vocation Judge of the Industrial Court, who sat on the case on Thursday, directed the JUTH’s management to maintain the status quo pending the det…

Risks in re-arresting Nnamdi Kanu

Has anyone noticed that rather than diminish, agitations for the restructuring Nigeria has grown in the aftermath of President Muhammadu Buhari’s crossing “our national red lines” speech penultimate Monday?

It started with a reaction from the Southern Leaders Forum, a congregation of groups from the three zones of Southern Nigeria.

The SLF, in insisting that Nigerians cannot be threatened out of their desire to renegotiate the country said: “We are of the view that leadership requires more than this at this crucial moment. We call on the President to realise that the country is in a very bad shape… This is the time to renegotiate Nigeria along federal lines negotiated by our founding fathers to stem the tide of separatist feelings and agitations.”

Ahead of this press conference, individual ethnic groups including Afenifere, representing the interest of the Yoruba; the Ijaw Youth Council; the Urhobo Progress Union and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo had condemned the President’s speech.

My Nigerian boyfriend planted cocaine in my bag, Russian death-row drug suspect alleges

A 30-year-old Russian woman accused of being a cocaine mule faces the death penalty in Vietnam.

But Maria Dapirka, who has already written a ‘farewell letter’ to her mother, claims she was set up by her lover who posed as a top footballer.

Her lawyers have said she has accepted she may soon be executed, but still clings on to some hope she will be freed after three years in prison.

Dapirka, who lived in Thailand when she met her lover, known as Nick, was caught with almost 3kg of cocaine by Vietnamese customs on a flight from Singapore.

She said the cocaine was planted in her luggage by Nick — or ‘Chib Eze’ — who apparently has a penchant for seducing attractive young women before conning them into carrying drugs.

Dapirka’s verdict and sentence was due to be handed down by a Vietnamese judge on Thursday in a Ho Chi Minh city court, but the session was postponed ‘for further investigation’ for the fifth time.

In a letter to her mother Olga, a desperate Dapirka said she was ready for a…

It’s useless hoping to live past age 115, scientists warn

Dutch researchers claimed Thursday to have discovered the maximum age “ceiling” for human lifespan, despite growing life expectancy because of better nutrition, living conditions and medical care.

Mining data from some 75,000 Dutch people whose exact ages were recorded at the time of death, statisticians at Tilburg and Rotterdam’s Erasmus universities pinned the maximum ceiling for female lifespan at 115.7 years.

Men came in slightly lower at 114.1 years in the samples taken from the data which spans the last 30 years, said Professor John Einmahl, one of three scientists conducting the study.

“On average, people live longer, but the very oldest among us have not gotten older over the last thirty years,” Einmahl told AFP.

“There is certainly some kind of a wall here. Of course the average life expectancy has increased,” he said, pointing out the number of people turning 95 in The Netherlands had almost tripled.

“Nevertheless, the maximum ceiling itself hasn’t changed,” he said.

Woman goes on 77 dates in two years searching for the right man

Twenty-nine-year-old Anna Heaton is picky. Incredibly picky. So picky that she has gone on hundreds of dates with 77 men in the past two years alone.

On a mission to find the right man before she hits 30, Anna has met men through dating apps, her mum, and even went so far as to appear on ‘Take Me Out’ programme.

Anna says that she does give most guys several chances but admits to being too choosy over her potential partner.

“I went on my 77th first date on Saturday, I think it’s because I’m too picky,” she tells SWNS. “It’s always me that ends up not wanting to date more and a lot of them think there is something wrong with me.”

“I often have a lot in common with people, but the spark just isn’t there, I just don’t fancy them. I would like to not get to 100 before I turn 30, but that is probably the reality,” she adds.

Anna has also been criticised in the past for marking each date out of 20 on a spreadsheet. She rates each man in categories such as looks, personality and spark.
